With this age of technology, computer, mobile and internet communication is a very important part of our lives, but speedy developments in digital communication today reach billions of people all over world, and India is no exception. Internet in India is still growing now as it reaches to the masses, and also with smart phones, people can access web via their cell phones. Social media and ecommerce platforms are growing rapidly in India; today Facebook (the top social network site till now) has a total of 56,675,740 active users in India to date ranks third globally in the number of users. Jamshedpur tops the eastern region for online shopping. (Stats by Courier Company)
All these technologies were mostly developed in Western countries, mostly in the USA, reflecting their society, which is very liberal in many senses compared to Indian society and cultures. In my personal opinion, Indian society has not matured enough to properly handle one of the best things technologies given to society.
The public was outraged when current Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mr. Kapil Sibal asked social media to monitor content and tried to ban them, and to some extent he was right. There is the Information Technology Act 2000 law, which provides legal recognition for all transactions carried out by means of electronic data interchange and other means of electronic communication, and there is a 2008 amendment known as IT(Amendment) Act, 2008, which addresses defamation on the internet.
In trying to restrict internet content and social media it may be that the government has its own interests and agenda at heart, but the internet might be more dangerous than this.

Clik here to view.In a recent study by Microsoft, Microsoft’s ‘Global Youth Online Behavior Survey’, found MORE THAN 50% of children in India being harassed by other internet users. India ranks third in the world only after China and Singapore for online bullying of children. This is a shame for nation that is so good in technology. The internet is a virtual world, but offences in virtual live may have real consequences. Recently a class 10 student in a Delhi school slashed his classmate’s arm with a paper cutter for uploading an altered picture of him with a girl on Facebook. This is not a surprising incident because such cyber bulling is common. Actually the internet is very easy weapon for such attacks and hate mails, fake profiles, defaming others, morphed or digitally altered images and online war gang is common. Those children on the receiving end always find themselves in a state of extreme stress where sometimes they think suicide is only answer. Tragically, there are many such cases.
The openness and anonymity the internet allows the user encourages its misuse. Youngsters think there are no consequences of their actions online and lose all inhibitions as there is no awareness about cyber laws, ethics and online behavior. Here it is the responsibility of parents, school and society to find and implement solutions for this. Schools should be aware of this disturbing scenario and regularly counsel their students. Children must be educated about cyber ethics and safety.
Because we cannot stop students using internet as it has many good things actually to help them study projects and find any information they need, if they use internet properly and positively.
We should come forward and educate people about cyber ethics and awareness.
Here are few steps.
1. Always monitor what students do online, what they share and how they behave.
2. Educate them about cyber laws; tell them about consequences.
3. Research some cases and present them to the students and get their views on the incident explained in each case study.
4. Parents should always make sure children use the internet more for productivity than normal surfing.
5. Parents should find if children are in stress due to online bulling and counsel them.
So let’s make internet more beautiful, use it properly and make others use it effectively and contribute to society.
